Yep, this is likely to be a Pretty Big Project.  As you wander around this site, you'll see that there are lots of things that could be happening.  Keeping track of all that activity and making sure that things are getting done is going to be a boatload of work.  If you are a Project Manager Type Person, this would be a great area for you to focus on if you're looking for a way to volunteer your efforts.

Here are some of the things that you could do

Right away

  • Name project manager
  • Appoint "get ready!" community planning committee
  • Conduct kickoff meeting of planning committee
  • Complete "get ready!" community preparedness project workplan
  • Prepare project cost estimate
  • Conduct survey of other entities for useful planning templates
  • Obtain budget approval
  • Form full-time team nucleus

Throughout the project

  • Project status reporting
  • Day to day task and resource management
  • Resource estimating and management
  • Policy issue tracking and resolution

Examples and resources

Hereīs a sample workplan for the whole project.  It is available as an HTML task list, or a downloadable file in "MPX" format that you can import into your project management software (ala MS Project).

Hereīs sample status report.  At first, these should probably be written about every 2 weeks.  As things get lively, you may want to up the frequency.  Itīs not a test, rather itīs a chronicle of events past, a projection of things to come and a mechanism for the project leader to describe and seek help resolving issues that are getting in the way of progress.
